Origins of Sriracha Sauce

The origins of Sriracha sauce itself can be traced back to the town of Si Racha in Thailand, where the sauce is said to have originated. The renowned Sriracha sauce, made from chili peppers, garlic, vinegar, sugar, and salt, gained popularity worldwide and became a staple condiment in many kitchens. My husband puts this stuff on everything, so this was a special meal for him. I have to say I enjoyed it just as much as he did.

Fusion of Honey and Sriracha, Oh My!

The concept of combining honey and sriracha in a chicken dish has likely evolved over time through experimentation in home kitchens and by chefs exploring new flavor combinations. The fusion of these ingredients creates a delightful glaze that coats the chicken, resulting in a harmonious blend of sweet and spicy notes.

Ingredients

  • boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • cloves garlic
  • fresh ginger
  • sriracha hot sauce
  • soy sauce
  • rice vinegar
  • honey
  • brown sugar
  • vegetable oil
  • water
  • corn starch
  • green onions or cilantro

Instructions

1. Prep the Chicken: Rinse the chicken with running water and pat dry with paper towels

2.Make the Marinade: In a bowl, combine minced garlic, grated ginger, sriracha hot sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, brown sugar, and vegetable oil. Mix well to create a flavorful marinade.

3.Marinate the Chicken: Place the chicken thighs in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish. Pour 1/2 of the marinade over the chicken, ensuring each piece is well-coated. Put the other 1/2 of the marinate in a saucepan cover and also place in the refrigerator. Allow the chicken thighs to marinate for at least 30 minutes, or for even more flavor, marinate in the refrigerator for a few hours.

With the chicken thighs marinated to perfection, it’s time to move on to the cooking stage.

1.Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

2.Place the chicken and 1/2 of the marinate in an 8X8 baking pan. The reserved 1/2 marinate, I store in a small saucepan, sealed with saran wrap. Cook for 15 minutes then baste the chicken with its juices and marinate and continue to bake for another 15 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 160 degrees using a meat thermometer. Remove the Honey Sriracha Chicken Thighs and switch the heat in the oven to a high broil, using your potholders move the oven rack to the highest position in the oven to broil.

While the chicken is baking, let’s focus on creating the savory sauce.

1.In a separate bowl, prepare a slurry with water and cornstarch for that perfect sauce consistency.

2.Now get your reserved marinate out the refrigerator, remove plastic wrap if used, then heat over medium high heat until it starts to form bubbles. Then whisk in the cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce.

3.Now pour and brush the sauce evenly over the chicken thighs.

4.Next return the Honey Sriracha Chicken Thighs to the oven for a quick glaze set, approximant 3-5 minutes, depending on the rack distant from the pan of chicken thighs. This is when you turn on the oven light and observe when the sauce is getting glossy and browning at that point remove your pan of chicken.

With the glazing complete, it’s time to savor the delicious result of your efforts.
